Definition
A watermark is a clickable branding image that appears in the corner of your videos on desktop. When clicked, it triggers a subscribe popup. Part of YouTube's channel branding settings.
Watermark Specifications
- Size: 150x150 pixels recommended
- Format: PNG, GIF (under 1MB)
- Transparency: Supported (recommended)
- Position: Bottom-right corner
- Timing: Custom start time, end of video, or entire video
Setting Up Watermark
- Go to YouTube Studio
- Select Customization → Branding
- Upload image under "Video watermark"
- Choose display timing
- Save changes
Best Practices
- Use subscribe-related image: "Subscribe" button or bell icon works well
- Keep it simple: Recognizable at small size
- Semi-transparent: Don't distract from video content
- Consistent with branding: Match your channel colors
- Show entire video: More exposure = more clicks
Watermark Limitations
- Only shows on desktop, not mobile or TV apps
- Doesn't appear on embedded videos
- Only visible during normal playback
- Some viewers find them distracting
Alternative: Subscribe CTAs
Since watermarks don't show everywhere, combine with:
- Verbal CTAs in video
- End screen subscribe buttons
- Cards linking to subscribe
- Description subscribe links
