Bitrate is the amount of data used per second of video, measured in megabits per second (Mbps). Higher bitrate means more visual detail preserved and larger file sizes. YouTube publishes recommended upload bitrates for each resolution and frame rate so creators can match the platform's encoding pipeline.

Recommended YouTube Upload Bitrates

These are YouTube's published recommendations for the H.264 codec. They represent the target average bitrate for standard frame rates (24, 25, 30 fps) and high frame rates (48, 50, 60 fps).

These are YouTube's recommended starting points for H.264. Uploading higher than these numbers won't hurt quality and is generally a good idea if your editor can export it and your internet can handle the upload. Uploading lower will work, but each compression step bleeds quality.

YouTube re-encodes audio to AAC at 128 kbps stereo (or Opus for some clients), so uploading 384 kbps gives the encoder enough headroom to preserve quality after re-encode.

Why YouTube Re-Encodes Your Videos

No matter what you upload, YouTube re-encodes every video into multiple resolution and bitrate variants. This is how the same video plays at 144p on a flaky connection and 4K on a TV. YouTube's playback bitrates are much lower than your upload because they're tuned for streaming bandwidth, not archival quality.

This is also why uploading at a higher bitrate produces better-looking output. The encoder has more pristine source data to throw away during compression, which leaves fewer artifacts in the final playback file. Uploading too close to YouTube's playback bitrate forces the encoder to compress already-compressed material, which is where banding, mosquito noise, and color shifts come from.
