What You Already Have

Smartphone (2018 or newer)

Any iPhone 8+ or mid-range Android from the past 5 years can shoot 1080p or 4K video that's perfectly acceptable for YouTube.

  • iPhone 8 and newer: Excellent quality
  • Samsung Galaxy S8+: Great for Android
  • Google Pixel 3+: Exceptional low-light
  • OnePlus, Xiaomi mid-range: Very capable

Window (Natural Light)

A window is the best free light source. Professional photographers pay thousands to recreate "window light."

  • Face the window directly
  • Overcast days = softest light
  • Avoid direct sunlight (harsh shadows)
  • Morning/late afternoon = golden hour

Quiet Room

Audio quality matters more than video quality. A quiet room eliminates the #1 beginner problem.

  • Close windows and doors
  • Turn off fans/AC while filming
  • Carpeted rooms absorb echo
  • Closets make great vocal booths

Optimal Smartphone Camera Settings

iPhone Settings

  1. Go to Settings → Camera → Record Video
  2. Select 1080p at 30fps (best balance of quality and file size)
  3. Enable "Lock Camera" to prevent accidental lens switching
  4. Turn OFF HDR video (causes compatibility issues)
  5. Use the rear camera (much better quality than front)

Android Settings

  1. Open Camera app → Settings (gear icon)
  2. Set resolution to 1080p or 4K at 30fps
  3. Disable video stabilization if stationary (reduces quality)
  4. Turn on grid lines for better framing
  5. Use rear camera with exposure lock

Pro Tips

  • Clean your lens! Fingerprints cause 90% of "blurry" smartphone footage
  • Lock exposure by tapping and holding on your face
  • Use airplane mode to prevent calls interrupting recording
  • Record horizontally (landscape) for YouTube
  • Leave 10% headroom above your head in frame

Free DIY Stabilization Solutions

The Book Stack Method

Stack books on a desk to get your phone at eye level. Lean phone against another book or mug.

Best for: Talking head videos, tutorials

The Rubber Band Tripod

Wrap a rubber band around your phone and hook it over a doorknob, shelf, or any protrusion.

Best for: Unique angles, overhead shots

The Mug/Glass Stand

Place phone in a mug or glass for vertical stability. Add a sock for padding.

Best for: Desk-level shots, unboxings

Free Audio Solutions

Built-in Microphone Optimization

  • Get within 2-3 feet of your phone
  • Point the microphone toward your mouth
  • Record in carpeted rooms (absorbs echo)
  • Hang blankets on walls to reduce reverb
  • Film in a closet for best acoustics (seriously!)

Earbuds as Lavalier Mic

Apple EarPods or any wired earbuds with a mic work surprisingly well:

  • Clip to your collar, mic facing up
  • Hide the cable under your shirt
  • Keep the earbud mic 6-8 inches from your mouth
  • Test levels before full recording

Free Audio Recording Apps

  • Voice Memos (iOS): Simple, reliable backup audio
  • Easy Voice Recorder (Android): Free with good quality settings
  • Audacity (Desktop): Record from any device, powerful editing

Natural Lighting Setup

The Window Setup (Recommended)

  1. Find a window that doesn't get direct sunlight
  2. Position yourself 2-4 feet from the window
  3. Face the window directly (light should hit your face)
  4. Camera between you and window (shooting toward room)
  5. Hang a white sheet on opposite wall to bounce fill light

Time of Day Guide

Time Light Quality Best For
6-8 AM Warm, golden, soft Lifestyle, vlogs
9-11 AM Bright, neutral Tutorials, talking head
12-2 PM Harsh (avoid direct sun) Overcast days only
